5 Easy Ways to Personalize Mother’s Day Gifts

When it comes to gifts for mothers of toddlers, husbands do most of the prep work and picking.  Emotions are often soaring high in the sky during those first few years on the big day, so don’t let the occasion pass without saluting the mom/wife in your life.

Here are 5 easy ways to DIY or personalize drugstore finds to show your appreciation without needing to be Pinterest Perfect:

(1) Get creative with the actual gift bag

While store-bought give bags are beautiful and sweet, try mixing things up by placing gifts in something that mom can use.  Think outside of the standard gift bag and opt for something like a spring coloured handbag (in pastel hues) or a make-up kit.  You can find these easily in everyday stores like Rexall or Winners.

Often times, a make-up bag isn’t something mom would spend much time or money on, so choosing a pretty pattern, or a luxurious fabric is a nice way to bundle up some goodies in a cute case.

(2) Choose a thoughtful theme

If you can’t think of what to get that special lady in your life, ask yourself: what does she like to do for herself?  For example, I prefer to do my own nails most times over sitting in a salon (I save my salon days for blow-outs and hair appointments).  So a manicure or pedicure package might make a nice gift since I’m always doing my own nails.  In this case, you might want to select some new polishes, some polish remover, a nice foot scrub/soak etc.

If snacks are more your lady’s thing, find her favourites and bundle them all together.  Nothing says that you’re paying attention to your partner’s likes/dislikes like a personalized little snack selection and or gift bag.

This is also a great way to plan out your gifts.  If you do a pedicure/bath themed present one year, then perhaps do a snack theme the next occasion.  It helps dad/kids stay clear of constantly repeating presents.

(3) Tie a scarf around the stems of a flower bouquet

If flowers are your mom/wife’s gift of choice, give them with a little twist: instead of handing them over in a case or plastic/paper wrap, choose a pretty spring scarf in a luxurious fabric or playful print, and wrap the scarf around the stems and  then secure it in place with a bow.  That way, when the flowers die, mom still has a thoughtful Mother’s Day memento from her family.

(4) Glam up the Gift Bag

If you’ve purchased a gift bag for mom, try adding a little glam by draping a necklace over the front of the bag or fastening it to the bag’s handles.  It adds a bit of sparkle and shine to the exterior of the bag.  Costume necklaces that pack a big punch can be purchased for as little as $6.99 at drug stores and every day retailers.

(5) Get creative with Jewelry Displays

If you’ve bought mom some earrings or anything else that’s small in size, try displaying it by setting it on top of a little plant.  Earrings tend to pop when contrasted with the natural environment so setting them against green leaves (even an artificial dollar store plant will do) can add a personal touch to your gift.

Overall, you don’t need to spend a lot to make mom feel special.  Putting a little bit of thought into a gift (by simply choosing a themed gift that your special someone would love) can be enough to show her that you actually put time and effort into her gift.  Let the kids help with the creative component and/or by decorating mom’s card.

Mother’s Day is such a special time to say “I love you” and “I appreciate you” but you don’t need to go over the top.  Giving mom something that she can hold on to and look back on for year’s to come (even just a pretty floral make-up bag) is a great way to show your appreciation.

Happy shopping!
